Wright move will be boost for academy

COLTS head coach at Alcester RFC, Gareth Williams, believes there’s plenty more to come from youngster Harry ‘Gaz’ Wright following his selection for Gloucester’s academy.

And he is hoping more players will follow in Wright’s footsteps, learning their rugby at the Kings Coughton club.

Williams said: “Harry joined Alcester RFC as an 11-year-old and made an immediate impact. When we moved into contact rugby, he continued to develop, and when he and six of his teammates were invited onto the Worcester Warriors player development programme, we felt, as a coaching team, that there was something special happening.

“Harry grew as a person and a player and then you saw that determination, that difference. When the England’s Junior Academy picked him up as a 16-year-old, it was only a matter of time before he was placed in a big club.

“The entire coaching team is so proud of what he has achieved. There's more to come for sure.”

The colts are calling on new players to join the club and work with the coaching team that helped Wright’s burgeoning career.

Alcester’s senior team are also back in training each Tuesday and Thursday from 7pm ahead of the new season which starts on 7th September away at Berkswell and Balsall in Counties One Midlands West South.

Following the club’s annual meeting, last season's player's player of the year, Christian Rushton, has been named 1st XV captain whilst Luke Spencer stays on as 2nd XV captain. Nick O'Connor takes over as club chairman, Andrew Flynn becomes president and Phil Birks takes on the role of director of rugby.
