Trio tackle gruelling Euro tour
THREE of Stratford’s finest young cyclists have just returned from an exhilarating journey to Holland where they took part in the thrilling five-stage European Tour of Assen, reports Ben Phyall.
This high-stakes race featured a variety of challenges for riders aged from ten to 16 including time trials, gruelling hilly road races, demanding cobbled climbs, and a fast-paced suburban criterium on the edge of town.
The Sherriff brothers, Benedict (ten) and Aidan (12), dazzled the crowd and both donned the prestigious white jersey as leaders in the sprint points category at times during the week.
Meanwhile, Charlie Shalders (13) consistently rode with the main peloton, stirring excitement near the front in his age group.
This event was nothing short of a mini Grand Tour, complete with the drama of wheel changes, bandages, road rash, podium presentations, and relentless effort from their dedicated support crew (parents).
Both Sherriff boys finished in the top ten overall, showcasing their incredible talent, while Shalders held his own, finishing 26th out of 51 riders. The week was a testament to their ability to compete with the best across diverse terrains.
Shalders was pleased with his Pidcock-esque manoeuvre, surging up several places before the finish line on stage five, while Aidan Sheriff’s consistent performance provided a significant confidence boost. Benedict Sheriff, energised by his podium appearances, is already planning for next year’s race, determined to claim the top step on the podium.
It was a spectacular week of racing, proving that these young Stratford cyclists have what it takes to shine on the international stage.
