Double delight for Claverdon on VPs day
Claverdon 38-15 Woodrush
Counties Two Midlands West (South)
THERE was double delight for Claverdon on Saturday as they claimed victory over Woodrush and raised hundreds of pounds for charity on their annual VPs day.
Visitors Woodrush kicked off and started confidently with some strong carries from their pack. Despite Claverdon’s best defensive efforts, the away side recorded two tries early on.
Determined not to let their heads drop, the Lions regained some territory. A clever kick through from James Williams saw George Redwood score his first for the day. A conversion from Sam Turrell took the score to 10-7 going into half time.
Claverdon started the second half with intent and a well-worked backs move from the restart saw Redwood dot over the line for his second of the afternoon, giving the hosts the lead for the first time.
The celebrations were cut short, however, as Woodrush’s forwards powered through the defensive line to score.
With the support of their VPs, Claverdon raised their heads and sought out another vital try. Redwood stepped his way towards the line to take his third of the day.
With the momentum firmly in Claverdon’s favour and a depleted Woodrush side, forwards Josh Dean, James Barton and Steven Grimsley all scored tries of their own to put the game to bed.
As an added bonus, the VPs day raised more than £600 for the late Doddie Weir’s MND charity, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.
Claverdon are at home to league leaders Manor Park on Saturday.
