Stratford salutes Sir Derek Walcott

As a tribute to Sir Derek Walcott (1930-2017), who died in March, The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is devoting its September Research Conversation to a discussion of his adaptation of

(commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1991).

The event, presented by Caribbean literature expert and SBT research advocate, Miranda Jones (University of Birmingham), will present her findings from the archives, and the event will be illuminated by readings from Walcott’s work.

was the first production of the now Artistic Director, Gregory Doran, for the RSC.

Walcott’s script blended the world of ancient Greece with that of the Caribbean region, combining cultural traditions in order to create an innovative and modern portrayal of Odysseus’s adventures. Walcott was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992.
