COMPETITION: Win tickets to see Hecuba at the RSC

Troy has fallen. It’s the end of the war, and the beginning of something else. Something worse. As the cries die down after the final battle, there are reckonings to be made.

Humiliated by her defeat and imprisoned by the charismatic victor Agamemnon, the great queen Hecuba must wash the blood of her buried sons from her hands and lead her daughters forward into a world they no longer recognise.

Agamemnon has slaughtered his own daughter to win this war. But now another sacrifice is demanded…

In a world where human instinct has been ravaged by violence, is everything as it seems in the hearts of the winners and those they have defeated?

Writer Marina Carr has said: “I’ve always disagreed with the legacy of Hecuba and the way she’s been treated, so I wanted to argue a bit with how she’s been handed down to us.

“I fundamentally disagreed with the idea of her killing her two little grandsons in revenge. I just never bought that. So I’ve written my own version of what might possibly have happened on that beach.”

RSC Deputy Artistic Director, Erica Whyman (The Christmas Truce, 2014), directs this searing vision of war, womanhood and courage, inventively told.

Hecuba runs to 17th October in the Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon.

For your chance to win one of three pairs of tickets to see the show, just answer the question on page 10 if this week's C.
