Isabelle Mousley, left, 17, who is studying Film Studies at Stratford College, and a fan of Studio Ghibli, tells Herald arts about the anime-makers
Studio Ghibli was founded by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, in June 1985. Some of my favourite films by them are Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro, both award-winning movies with a charming quality; the crazy characters and sense of freedom enticed me to them.
The films, while weird and wonderful, show honest character development and deal with real issues that kids have to deal with. This allowed me to connect with these heart-felt movies that also discuss world problems, such as environmentalism, despite their fantasy element they find interesting ways of showing a sense of realism.
Studio Ghibli create stories that can be watched by children and adults. The stories are so wonderful and imaginative, you can’t help but get engrossed in the storylines and emotionally invested in the characters.
I recommend seeing these films as they stay with you forever; the aesthetic shots and the attention to detail creates new ways of seeing the world, and everyone should have that experience.
