Weekend wins for the Bards and Romans

GOALS from Paul McCone and Charlie Williams fired Stratford Town to victory in East Anglia and Alcester Town won to secure a second cup semi-final in a week.

Stratford headed to Lowestoft Town for their longest trip of the season and returned with a 2-1 win.

Chances went begging at both ends before the Bards opened the scoring five minutes before the interval when McCone headed in a corner.

Williams came off the bench to double the lead after he had latched onto a through ball but Stratford were denied a clean sheet when Sam Johnson took advantage of a rare defensive mix-up.

Having booked their place in the semi-final of the Herefordshire County Cup earlier in the week, Alcester Town made it through to the same stage of the Charity Bowl with a 2-1 win at home to Worcester United.

There had been little to choose between the sides but two goals just before half-time proved enough for the Romans. Dan Jarvis netted the first with Adam Garmson quickly adding a second with a curling shot from just inside the box.

Drew Banner pulled a goal back late in the game but Town held on for victory.

Elsewhere, Earlswood Town lost their MFL Division Two match at home to Fairfield Villa 2-0, Southam United lost 6-1 to Ludlow Town in Division One of the Hellenic League and Shipston Excelsior drew 2-2 at KEA in the Oxfordshire Senior League.
