Warwick School helps Japan create World Cup heroics

None more so than atWarwick School, who hosted the squad for two weeks with players utilising the school’s excellent facilities.

Unfortunately, despite three wins, Japan bowed out after finishing third in their group but they left a lasting impression on students and staff.

Warwick School was selected as one of the 41 Official Team Bases for Rugby World Cup 2015.

The team was welcomed to Warwick at a reception at Warwick Castle, hosted by Warwick District and Town Councils.

The Japanese players then attended training sessions at Warwick School, most days, held in the sports hall, the gym or on the first team pitch. Whilst their focus was on training and match performance, the players found some time to talk to the boys at school and sign autographs. They also presented prizes at an Under-11s Rugby Tournament for local schools.

The highlight of their visit for the school was a training session with the Japan’s coaches, attended by a large number of Warwick School rugby players.

Mark Nasey, director of rugby at Warwick School, said: “It has been a pleasure to be part of Rugby World Cup 2015, the third largest sporting event in the world and to host the Japanese team.

“Japan have indeed, been one of the teams of the tournament with their win over South Africa and a record-breaking domestic TV audience of 25 million for their match against Samoa.

“The players have been warmly welcomed by our students. Our older rugby players were truly privileged to attend a training session with the six coaches from the Japanese team, including head coach Eddie Jones.”
