U52kg gold for Stratford Boxing Academy's Georgina Ellery at England Boxing National Development Championships
GEORGINA Ellery bounced back from the heartache of being knocked out of the England Boxing National Development Championships semi-finals last year to take the under-52kg crown this time around.
The Stratford Boxing Academy star put on two stunning, textbook and technical performances in Banbury over the weekend of 22nd-23rd October to take the gold medal with a first-round stoppage in the final.
Ellery, who exited at the last-four stage in 2021, has shown that strength, resilience and belief can lead to success.
In her semi-final, Ellery used her long range and fast feet to work in and out, landing straight shots on her opponent at a ferocious pace for the first two rounds.
She got drawn into a fight in a closer third round, where she showed she could still hold her own in the pocket.
This secured Ellery a unanimous points win against a well-schooled opponent and a place in the national final.
On finals day, Ellery’s confidence had grown and this was evident in her sharp hands and feet right from the first bell, as she won her final in style with a first-round stoppage.
Ellery was not the only success for Stratford Boxing Academy.
Melissa Tout fell short in her final, and Zahrah Khan in her quarter-final bout.
This was Tout’s and Khan’s first championship campaign but their experiences would have been incredibly valuable, with both putting on impressive performances against more experienced opponents.
All three girls have come straight back into training to make adjustments and prepare for their next outing at the England Boxing Winter Women’s Box Cup, the largest female box cup in the country, at the start of December where they will be representing the Fight Like a Girl (FLAG) Midlands team.
The team will be led by Stratford coach and ex-boxer Miriam Zouhou.
Stratford Boxing Academy are looking for more members to join the growing female squad.
