Tiernan move a 'massive coup' for Alcester

MANAGER Danny Janes hailed the signing of former Solihull Moors and Romulus midfielder Colm Tiernan as ‘massive coup’ to boost their promotion campaign.

Though Tiernan, a former academy player at Wolverhampton Wanderers, has not played for a few seasons because of work and family commitments, Janes says he will be an important asset as the games come thick and fast in the next few months.

“Colm has played at a very high standard, he has an excellent reputation and is thought very highly of,” said Janes. “His CV speaks for itself, he attracted the attention of Solihull Moors which shows how much quality he has.

“For a club the size of Alcester to sign a player of Colm’s calibre is fantastic, it just shows how far we have come in terms of player recruitment.

“Colm hasn’t committed to football for a few years now because of work and family commitments, he could easily go and play in Step 4 or 5 of the pyramid.

“I met Colm through coaching. He said he has missed playing since he couldn’t commit the time anymore, I know he will enjoy his spell with us.”

Janes identified April as a crucial month that could make-or-break Alcester’s season. After this weekend’s whiteout which left them with 16 league games to play, they currently lie seventh in Midland League, Division Three, ten points behind second-placed Bartestree, but with six games in hand.

“Mid-week potentially suits Colm, hopefully we can get him involved in as many fixtures as possible,” added Janes.

“The squad is going to be stretched with all the games we need to play. It is great that we have so many options. I think Colm can play a massive role in our promotion push.”

Alcester are due to return to action on Saturday with a trip to AFC Solihull, who occupy third place, seven points ahead but having played seven games more.
