Stratford face title-chasing Nuneaton Borough after earning point against Ilkeston Town
GAVIN Hurren admits a trip to title-chasing Nuneaton Borough this weekend could not be a tougher test for Stratford Town’s improving form – but it’s a challenge he will relish.
Hurren says the last two results – last Saturday’s draw at Ilkeston Town following a win at AFC Rushden & Diamonds – has provided a big lift after a horror run.
The manager stressed they need to keep improving to push away from the Southern Premier Central drop-zone and on Saturday the third-from-bottom Bards will look to turn the tables at third-placed Boro.
“For me the last two results have been really positive, how the lads have applied themselves and how they have worked for each other,” said Hurren.
“It’s been really frustrating this season, not only for us, but for the club and the fans. It’s been nice to give a little bit back to the fans – we needed it to say ‘thank you for your support’.
“The lads have kept working and working and if you do that in every minute in every game and in every training session then you will reap your rewards.
“Now we need to build on it and continue with the same approach to get the points to climb the table.
“Every game is massive for us but it doesn’t come much tougher than Nuneaton away.
“They are a good squad, with plenty of experience and it’s a great place to play. But after the last two results we will be positive.”
Hurren praised the Town team ethic and spirit after Will Grocott’s penalty equaliser earned a point at home to Ilkeston. It was only Town’s second home game of 2023 and they were dealt a cruel blow by conceding on the stroke of half-time but they fought back.
“It shows character, it shows commitment,” said Hurren. “There have been some outstanding performances, I can’t single out anyone.
“We’ve maybe not had the rub of the green this season but now we’ve got to move forward. We have to take responsibility, every one of us, staff and players, and we have to apply ourselves.
“We’ve got 17 cup finals left.”
Defender Dan Lafferty can return after suspension for Saturday’s trip to Liberty Way, but Dan Vann remains absent. He is booked in for a second scan on his damaged ankle.
After Nuneaton, Stratford return to the Arden Garages Stadium on Tuesday to take on St Ives Town (7.45pm).
