Stratford suffer second half slump but Shipston win

STRATFORD suffered a heavy 45-8 defeat at the hands of visitors Newent to leave them with just one win from their opening five games in Regional Two Midlands West going into this weekend’s match at Malvern.

The Gloucestershire side scored first with a converted try before Gwilym Davis closed the gap to 7-3 with a penalty kick.

With 20 minutes gone, there was not much between the two teams. Newent kicked a penalty with Stratford responding with a series of line-outs that resulted in a driving maul and Angus Wightman crashed over the line to make the score 10-8.

It was the visitors who finished the half on a high though when their winger kicked ahead a fumbled ball and won the race to the line for a converted effort.

Newent ran away with the game in the second half though, posting 28 points without reply.

Elsewhere in the league, Shipston beat Moseley Oak 34-20 in what was George Minogue’s 150th game for the club.

Alcester suffered their first defeat in Counties One Midlands West (South), losing 36-14 at Luctonians 2nds who had not lost for two-and-a-half seasons. Dwayne Cruickshank scored the visitors’ only try with Ed Gough slotting over three penalties.

In Counties Two Midlands West (East), Harbury made it three wins on the bounce as they saw off Old Wheatleyans 36-7, Claverdon won 32-14 at Birmingham and Solihull but Southam were edged out 33-31 at home Broadstreet 2nds.
