STRATFORD AC’s English shot put champion Lewis Byng has been selected to compete for the Great Britain team at the European Athletics U18 Championships which begins on Thursday, in Gyor, Hungary.

The GB team will have two athletes in the shot put after an impressive season from the U18 athletes.

George Hyde and Byng are selected for the boys’ event, both setting recent personal bests of 18.89m and 18.86m respectively.

Meanwhile, a record number of Stratford AC junior athletes have been selected for the Warwickshire schools squad at the English Schools Athletics Championships.

Twelve athletes are in the squad covering nine different events with more than a third of the Warwickshire team coming from Stratford AC.

Mat Millward Brookes has also been selected to compete in the long jump for Gloucester schools.

Four of those athletes — Imogen Sheppard, Adam Farrow, Millie Leighton and George Fox Rowe — have been selected to compete for Warwickshire schools at the English Schools Athletics Combined Events Championships in September.

“The coaching team is incredibly proud of the selected athletes,” said the club’s head coach, Paul Bearman.

“After the really hard slog of training since September and competing since January, the coaching team will be fine tuning the athletes over the next two weeks and then they’re good to go for the championships, which is the fourth biggest athletics competition in the world.”
