The Stratford Domino League season draws to a close with the annual finals night held at The Yard of Ale

The Stratford Domino League season drew to a close with the annual finals night held this year at The Yard of Ale.

As always a good crowd turned out to watch the conclusion of the outstanding cup competitions and the presentations to the season's winners.

As two teams, Yard and Stags, had a healthy representation in all the individual events the Knockout Cup final between them had been played off a couple of week's earlier.

Stags were the KO Cup winners.

Having already been crowned league champions, Yard were looking to pull off the double and took a major step towards it when leading 2-1 before Stags rallied to level.

A pair apiece brought the final to a dramatic last table decider which flipped back and forth until the advantage finally fell the way of the ecstatic Stags.

The Threes final was also played off early with Stags and Yard again well represented, this time though both had to take a back seat as the prize was taken by the Windmill trio of R Pennucci (Chillo), Chris Green and Steve Green.

That left just the three finals to be decided on the night, with all being the best of three legs.

The Single 9's saw Mark Harris of Nomads taking on Martyn Dyke from Yard.

The Yard captain took the first leg before the match was brought level again.

Sean McMillan won the Single 7s.

An extremely cagey third leg swung to and fro until finally Harris began to get the upper hand to run out the narrow victor.

The Single 7's between Yard representatives Eric Davis and Sean McMillan was a much more straight-forward affair with McMillan keeping things nice and simple on the way to securing a 2-0 victory.

The final decider, the Pairs, pitched together team-mates from this year's two dominant outfits as Andy Dyke and Sonia Treadwell from Yard faced Ken Turnball and Jim Greatorex of Stags.

The Stags duo took the early advantage with the first leg before the Yard pairing got themselves right back into it in the second.

The decider began close enough but things started to fall Stags way and they quickly capitalised to take the trophy two legs to one.

With all the evening's action concluded, it was time to present the trophies and prizes to the season's deserved winners.

Charity event victors were first up with Ken Turnball and Jane Symonds of Stags taking the Mixed Pairs.

Patrick Crickett from Avenue and R Pennucci of Windmill secured the Blind Pairs and Jane Burrows of Clifford lifted the Taffy Evans Memorial Trophy.

The awards then turned to the league season with Avenue again collecting the Wooden Spoon after a difficult, disrupted season.

Top individual player of the league season is rewarded with the Remembrance Cup which this year went the way of Stags ace Ken Turnball.

Narrowly defeated in a play off last year, he brushed aside all challengers this time around to claim the coveted trophy in style, adding to the rest of the silverware he had already collected after his truly sensational season.

That just left the presentation to the league runners up, Clifford, and the league champions shield, fittingly, to the evening's hosts Yard.

The league extends many thanks to The Yard of Ale for hosting a terrific evening.

The annual meeting to structure the new season will be held at the Yard of Ale at 8pm on August 28 when the league will hopefully be welcoming back the existing six teams and greeting any new pubs or clubs who are considering joining.
