THE River Stour was good enough to fish for Shipston AC’s Winter League match last Sunday.

After days of watching the water levels go up and down, 21 anglers braved the bitterly cold and biting wind.

Weights were slightly down on what was expected, but anglers were just happy to fish the river again.

Dave Smith, who travelled from Newbury to take part, won the match with a catch of 11lb 12oz.

Robert Reynolds was second (9lb 3oz), ahead of Gary Didcot (8lb 12oz) and Robert Taylor (7lb 8oz).

Meanwhile, the recent Christmas Open had to be switched from the River Stour to the Lakes at Aston Magna and Clifford Chambers, due to the level of the Stour after the rain and snow.

The overall winner was Shipston AC’s Steve Aston, who caught 22lb 12oz of carp from Aston Magna.

Second place went to Andy Bruce (Stratford and Outdoors) with 21lb 4oz of bream, also from Aston Magna.

Section winners at Clifford Chambers were Trevor Chalk (Cadence Fishing) 22lb 12oz, including carp of 13lb and John Walkden (JW Sensas Smithies) with 21lb 4oz

Aston Magna section one winners were Steve Hemming (Alcester Sports) with 18lb 2oz and Nick Purdy with 3lb 14oz. In section two, Chris Hallows (Stratford AC) bagged 5lb 12oz, while Dave Oxford (Shipston AC) weighed in with 3lb 8oz.
