Shipston Excelsior countdown to new season

FOOTBALL

SHIPSTON Excelsior's players have been urged to seize their last chance to impress before the season kicks off this weekend.

Shipston will head to Blockley tonight (Tuesday) for a friendly and then wind up their warm-up preparations by playing South Redditch at Tysoe on Thursday. Both matches kick off at 6.30pm.

The Midland League Division Three season begins on Saturday when Shipston travel to Boldmere Sports and Social.

Manager Steve Hedderman has maintained the core of the side which finished their debut Midland League season in an excellent seventh place, and added half-a-dozen new recruits.

He suggests more are in the pipeline and competition for places is going to be intense.

New faces include defender Harry Smith from Hook Norton, forward Chris Mills from Badsey Rangers, ex-Alcester and Bidford keeper Alex Gretton, and Moreton winger Martin Tomes while Craig Robins and Will Beach have also returned to the club.

“We’ve had a good turnout for pre-season training and we had two wins, one draw and one defeat in our friendlies so far,” said Hedderman.

“There’s more strength in depth in the squad now and now we’ve got two more games for those players to stake their claim to be involved on Saturday.”
