Southam United see off spirited Yarnton to move up to fourth
SOUTHAM United ended their recent poor run of form when they ran out 3-2 winners at Yarnton FC to move up to fourth place in the Oxfordshire Senior League Premier Division table, writes David Hucker.
Leading scorer Jay Lawes set Saints on their way in the 23rd minute with his 11th goal of the season and Melvin Mauritson doubled the advantage with ten minutes of the half remaining to give them a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break.
Yarnton got one back in the 72nd minute but, just two minutes later, player of the match Mauritson struck again with a great run into the box to make it 3-1 for Saints who were looking on their way to a welcome three points.
Manager Richard Kay brought on defender Ross Feasey in place of Shane Osborne to see Saints through the last ten minutes, however it wasn’t all over as Yarnton scored from a free-kick with five minutes of normal time to go to leave the match poised.
The Saints held on to record their first win after four league and cup defeats in a row and now face Dunlop this coming Saturday in the Coventry Telegraph Cup (2.15pm kick-off).
