Rowers make regatta final at Olympic venue

WALLINGFORD Regatta runs every year at Dorney Lake at the 2012 Olympic venue and heralds the start of the major regatta season running up to Henley Royal Regatta, reports Chris Best.

It is the first opportunity for crews to test themselves against the top clubs and schools in the country over 2,000 metres.

Stratford Boat Club’s junior section entered Maddie Hall, V Vondrak, Uch Nwachukwa, Kate Richardson and cox Imogen Hill in the junior coxed four event.

They coped well with a gusty head wind recording the third quickest time across the three heats of six crews to secure a place in the final.

Three hours later, the wind had dropped and the conditions were perfect as all six crews were neck and neck over the first 750 metres of the final.

Wallingford and Henley then eased ahead to take first and second as Surbiton, Sir William Perkins and Stratford fought for third place. Surbiton completed the podium and Stratford stole fourth from Sir William Perkins by six inches with an heroic last 100m.

Stratford’s J17/J18 Coach Sam Hill said: “Fourth at Wallingford is a very encouraging performance and the crew are improving every time they get in the boat.”
