Rising star Laura claims county crown
SHIPSTON High School pupil Laura Griffiths was one of only 24 swimmers chosen to represent the West Midlands at the ninth Trophée National des Hortillons, in Amiens, France.
Following five days of training and racing, the 14-year-old reached the final in the 400m freestyle and more significantly smashed her personal best from the earlier day’s heat by nine seconds.
Griffiths swims in the top performance squad for Leamington Spa Swimming Club and having returned back home with confidence, she was ready to shine at the Warwickshire County Championships at Coventry.
She won a hoard of trophies and medals, which included being crowned Warwickshire junior champion in the 200m individual medley, claiming a three-second PB.
A terrific swim in under a minute in the 100m freestyle and another crushed PB in the 200m freestyle rewarded her with the title of fastest junior and senior in both races.
It was in the 400m freestyle that her endurance was needed to claim her second position in the 14 years and over category with a massive five second improvement on her time and gold in her age group for the 50m freestyle rounded off an incredible tally.
