Racers step up title challenge with battling away win

FOOTBALL

RACING Club Warwick extended their unbeaten league run to 12 games after edging out hosts Brocton 3-2 in the Midland League Division One.

Victory leaves the Racers just one point behind new leaders Atherstone Town, who leapfrogged former pacesetters Lichfield City with a 3-1 win in their head-to-head contest. Warwick also have two games in hand.

The Racers struck first at Brocton, with Wade Malley netting on 24 minutes, only for Alex Scott to level four minutes before half-time following a corner.

Two goals in three minutes from Ben Mackey, the first a penalty and the second a shot from the edge of the area, tipped the contest in Warwick’s favour before Daniel Lomas replied ten minutes from time.

Sean Brain smashed four goals to help Studley chalk up a first league win in seven matches, demolishing Nuneaton Griff 7-1 at the Beehive.

Brain netted twice in the first half with Jake Donnelly and Jordan Jones also on target as the Bees led 4-1.

Former Bromsgrove Sporting and Evesham striker Brain added two more in the second period, with Donnelly bagging his second of the game.

Basement side Littleton went down 5-1 at Rocester, with Antonio Alcaraz Zamora scoring for the winless Ton Boys, who had Lewis Clarke sent off for two bookings.
