Moment of Andy Matthews magic rescues a point for Earlswood Town

ANDY Matthews scored two goals from the bench, including a stunning 35-yard strike in stoppage time, to help Earlswood Town claim a 2-2 draw from their Midland League Division Two game against fierce rivals Knowle on Saturday.

After a goalless first 45 minutes at The Pavilions, visitors Knowle took the lead in the 79th minute when Tom Cullen ghosted in at the back post to finish with a low strike past Leon Phillips.

Failing to surrender, the Earls brought on Matthews and in only his second performance after a long two-year lay-off due to a horrendous cruciate injury, he got his side back on level terms in the 87th minute when he slotted home with aplomb after turning his marker.

Knowle looked to have snatched all three points when Brandon Hague calmly slotted past Phillips after the Earls were guilty of not clearing their lines.

However, deep into stoppage time Matthews unleashed an unstoppable 35-yard shot past the stranded Jack Tregartha to rescue a point for the Earls.

Meanwhile, the Earls have been boosted by the backing of experienced Premier League goalkeeper Ben Foster.

While continuing to represent Watford in the top flight, the former England goalkeeper has started to venture into the world of vlogs and podcasts.

Combining his two sporting loves of football and cycling, Foster’s The Cycling GK YouTube channel is proving to be a huge hit.

However, it’s not just about subscribers and views for the 38-year-old, as he’s using his platform as a chance to reinvest into the grassroots game, which has come to the Earls’s benefit.

The Cycling GK is now the official sleeve sponsor on the club’s home and away kits while The Pavilions will be home to a pitchside advertising board carrying the eye-catching branding. Club chairman Andy Walker said: “As somebody who started off their glittering career at a non-league club, it’s great to see that our level of the English game is still close to Ben’s heart.

“Any sort of sponsorship is vital to a club like Earlswood, but we are also absolutely honoured to now have an association with somebody of Ben’s stature.

“The Cycling GK branding on our shirts and at our home ground are sure to catch plenty of attention throughout this season and raise awareness for both parties.”

“We look forward to welcoming Ben and Tom Ochoa from The Cycling GK down to a game in the near future – and hopefully we even get to see an Earls shirt flash up on their YouTube channel at some point.”

The Earls visit unbeaten league leaders Fairfield Villa on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
