Marathon and triathlon success stories

STRATFORD Athletics Club had a number of runners taking part in the Berlin Marathon with one of them set a new club record for the distance.

Andy Lawrence completed the course in 2.29.26 beating his own previous best. Three other runners from the club were among the 55,000 taking part in the race. Andy Cox finished in 2.55.55, Nigel Chidgey in 3.58.52 and Chris Bloomfield in 4.53.23.

Lawrence said: “After missing out on my sub 2.30 goal in London by 55 seconds, I locked my focus on Berlin to achieve my biggest race goal yet. I had heard people say that Berlin had huge personal best potential because of its pancake-flat route so it seemed perfect to right the wrong from London. Crossing that line and reaching this goal is a moment that’ll live long in the memory.”

For Chidgey, his time represented a 20-year personal best in what was his 18th marathon.

He said: “My aim was not just to complete Berlin but, at the age of 60, to get a personal best and a qualifying time for Boston.

“So last November I joined Stratford AC, put a plan together and as the months passed my personal bests for park runs and half marathons were coming down. Cutting a long story short I didn’t hit the target I wanted but got a sub-4 (hour time) and that’s a 20-year personal best.”

Hundreds of athletes took part in the Warwickshire Triathlon at the weekend which started and finished in Stratford.

There were various categories but all involved a swim at Stratford Leisure Centre, an 18km cycle ride around the lanes and then a run of either 2.5km or 5km.

The provisional results show that the open event for the sprint triathlon was won by Jake Fisher of the Leeds Triathlon Centre, who finished in 52.06. Peter Mitchell was second in 53.11 and Agris Brivmanis third in 54.35.
