Late goals knock Racing Club Warwick out of FA Vase

FOOTBALL

RACING Club Warwick’s FA Vase adventure came to an end but only after a battling performance to lose 2-0 at home to United Counties League side Wisbech Town.

The Fenman arrived at Hampton Road unbeaten in 16 league and cup games but Warwick kept them at bay in Saturday’s third round tie until two goals in the final 20 minutes.

Wisbech’s much-travelled striker Michael Frew was twice denied by the woodwork in the first half but the Racers, who had won eight matches in a row, were also a threat with their swift breaks.

But Wisbech got the breakthrough on 68 minutes through Alex Beck, who slotted home from six yards after Frew pounced on a defensive error.

It got worse when Midland League Division One side Warwick had substitute Josh Blake sent off for a straight red card just three minutes after coming onto the pitch.

Wisbech booked their place in the last 32 in injury time when Sam Murphy slotted home a penalty after Frew had been brought down.

In the Midland League Division One, Studley recorded their first win in four matches after edging out hosts Brocton 2-1.

The Bees had Aaron Westwood for both goals before Joe Hartshorne replied.

In the Birmingham Vase, Earlswood Town bowed after losing a penalty shoot-out to visitors Coton Green. The second-round tie ended 2-2 but Coton Green prevailed 3-1 on spot-kicks.
