The Bards grabbed the lead against the run of play in the 26th minute when Josh Hawker made the most of a loose ball to charge through on goal and slot past Eagles goalkeeper Alexander Street.

As the second half wore on it seemed as though Stratford were on course to claim all three points, especially when Liam O’Brien pulled off a superb stop late on to prevent the recently-introduced Will Summerfield from slamming home from point-blank range.

However, Summerfield would not be denied and in the 88th minute he fired in the equaliser to ensure the spoils were shared.

Holdsworth admitted it’s “difficult to reflect on what you want” after the opening day but has urged the Bards to kick on as they head into two away games in the space of three days.

First up is a trip to St Ives Town on Saturday (3pm kick-off) and then a short journey to Redditch United follows on Monday (7.45pm kick-off).

“I was really disappointed for the lads because we could have stopped [the equaliser] by ourselves,” Holdsworth told the Herald. “We created a number of great chances and at 1-0 we played very well but we needed that second goal to win the game.

“That did not come and it’s disappointing that in the final two minutes of the game they score.”

He added: “I thought Bedford looked sharp, they lacked that clinical edge like ourselves but you’ve got to give them credit. You could see they’ve been a team for a long time while we’ve added several new faces to ours.

"We’ve just got to keep working hard and look forward to the next game.”
