Girls make history with tournament victory
STRATFORD Girls’ Grammar School (SGGS) has made history by winning the u14 West Midlands Netball Championships for the first time.
This landmark victory also makes them the first state school to claim the title in more than a decade.
The squad’s journey to the title was marked by dominant performances throughout the tournament, culminating in a decisive victory in the final which secured a spot at the national finals.
The day began with the team traveling to Phoenix Collegiate brimming with excitement and determination. They set the tone early with a commanding 23-5 win in their opening match, showcasing their prowess on the court.
Their momentum continued throughout the pool stage, where they secured a further five emphatic victories to advance to the semi-finals where a 13-8 victory booked their place in the final. Even before stepping onto the court for the last match, their qualification for the national finals was confirmed, an achievement in itself.
With the team focused and determined, their hard work paid off with an emphatic win to see them crowned West Midlands champions.
Miss Dent, the school’s head of PE, praised the squad’s dedication and teamwork. She said: “The girls were outstanding all day, both on and off the court. Their teamwork, enthusiasm, and determination to succeed was exceptional.
“Captains Sophia and Alice led the team all day, preparing the players for each match and acting as excellent role models. Although this is an SGGS success, it is also important to highlight the strong link we have with Stratford Thunderbirds and the hard work they dedicate to these players.”
