STRATFORD-on-Avon Golf Club hosted the 25th Am-Am Tournament last weekend, with 48 of the finest leading amateurs from across the Midlands competing for the right to be crowned champion.

Players are drawn with three Stratford members who also compete for a team trophy.

Setting the early pace was Jamie Farnsworth from Coxmoor Golf Club with a fine five-under-par 67, only to be beaten by one shot by Ross Overton, of Sherwood Forest GC, with a 66.

Overton, previous champion on no less than four occasions and a Nottinghamshire player for 27 years, is always a firm favourite for the event.

Stratford’s own Rob Copperthwaite, who was playing in the afternoon, knew exactly what he needed to do and put up a great fight, but came up one shot shy, returning the same score as Farnsworth, a 67.

In the team event, Eugene Didora, Anthony Hill and Paul Huggins won the trophy with a score of 163.

Club vice-captain Jim O’Halleran, Wendy Georgeson and David Sutton were one shot back on 164.

Other recent results include the Ladies Hart Trophy, where Paula Winwood won incredibly for the eighth time.

Played over 36 holes, Winwood won by five shots from nearest challenger Skye Furnace.

David and Caroline Walley won the Mixed Foursomes Cup, a shot clear of Daniel and Elizabeth Sheehan.
