First defeat of the season for FISSC

FISSC slipped to their first defeat of the season, losing by five wickets at home to Division One neighbours Stratford 3rds.

But it proved a tense afternoon at Tiddington with the visitors scoring the winning runs with just a few balls to spare.

Batting first, FISSC suffered an early setback when opener Deepak Sharma was bowled by Sam Douthwaite (1-23) with just his third ball but the Farmers recovered with fellow opener Tim Sambrook (16) and Subash Abraham then putting on 75 for the second wicket.

Abraham revelled at the crease, hitting six 4s and seven 6s on his way to 81 off just 63 balls but runs proved hard to come by for his teammates with just Arun Chandran (34) and the day’s skipper Louis Glover (16) troubling the scorers as FISSC were dismissed for 184 in the 38th over.

Young pace bowler George Leaver took 3-29 from his six-over spell while Adam Warbrick took 3-45 from eight overs. There were also wickets for Will Lowis and Sam Gill.

The Stratford reply also got off to a shaky start when Richard Smith fell with the total on eight, but Adam Joseph (37) and James Harcourt (33) then put on 100 for the next wicket.

Lowis added 28 and Anay Joshi an unbeaten 17 with the visitors also being helped by 67 extras as they reached their target in the 44th over.

Glover (1-17 off 9.4 overs) and Farhan Ahamad (1-23 off ten) were the pick of the bowlers but there were also wickets for Chandran, Prashanth Prabhakaran and Nishi Kant.

That result meant Alcester and Ragley were able to extend their lead at the top even though their match at home to Adlestrop was abandoned after the visitors had scored 251/9 at the end of their innings.

Further down the table, Ashorne and Moreton Morrrell inflicted a crushing 86-run defeat on hosts Temple Grafton.

Thomas Husselby scored 83 for the visitors and James Cutts 42 as they made 209/7. Grafton were set a revised target of 156 from 23 overs but fell some way short, slumping to 69 all out with Thomas Cox taking 5-7 from his four overs.

Also in Division One, Norton Lindsey and Wolverton picked up just their second win of the season at home to fellow strugglers The Lenches.

Opener Dan Fell (49) and captain Andrew Dellow (45) were the pick of the home batsmen as they helped their side to 266 all out with Jake Rushton also adding a useful 32.

The visitors were set a revised target of 220 from 32 overs after a rain delay but were dismissed for 193 thanks to some excellent bowling. Andrew Dewar took 3-41 and there were two apiece for Oliver Watson, David McInnes and skipper Dellow.

With just 16 points separating the top two, leaders Alcester and Ragley head to Ashorne and Moreton Morrell on Saturday while FISSC make the trip to Rowington.

In Division Two, Southam edged to within five points of leaders Stoneleigh following their 162-run victory over Long Itchington which included fine knocks from Stuart Jones (98) and Pete Rigny (86). Jones then capped a fine afternoon by taking 4-28.
