Finals day sees Welford in fine form
ROYAL Leamington Spa hosted this year’s county finals with all but the county singles (both players in three finals) and mixed pairs – to be held at the Warwickshire Women’s BA finals this year – being played.
And it proved a good day for Welford who won three events – the fours, senior fours and pairs.
In the fours, the quartet of Andy Prickett, Martin Timms, Dan Box and Andy Walters took on Avenue Coventry and although Welford took an early lead, it was all square after ten ends. The next six ends were all decided by singles, though five were scored by Walters’ rink, giving them a four-shot advantage with two ends left and they went on to win 16-14.
Adam Smith of Avenue Leamington took the honours in the two wood singles while Welford’s Walters and Box were 19-9 victors in the pairs, seeing off Nuneaton duo Scott and Graham Ashby.
The Welford pair were seven up after three ends. Both sides picked up four shots to reach the midway stage with Walters and co still up by seven. That lead was extended to double figures and a penultimate end single took Box and Walters into an unbeatable lead.
Avenue Leamington were successful in the triples and they also had the junior singles champion in Aiden Maries while the junior pairs crown went to Harry Smith (Nuneaton) and Jordan Ward (Rugby). Roger Hill (Sherwood Park) claimed the unbadged singles title.
