Alex Adams and Georgie Campbell were competing at Sefton Park for the event, which also formed part of the British Athletes Cross Country Challenge Series.

Adams finished 30th in the U17 men’s category, clocking 18:16 and was just 24 seconds off a top 20 place.

“It was a very fast race that took it out of me from the start,” said Adams.

“The pace never slowed. In a sprint finish I overtook three or four other runners.

“It was disappointing for me, especially when you look at the results.”

In the World Athletics U20 women’s race, Campbell finished in 39th place with a time of 16:24, just 16 seconds shy of a top 20 place.

The 2021-22 British Athletics Cross Challenge Series returned this winter, as the UK’s best cross country athletes take part in the five-event series which culminates in Loughborough for the final next March.
