Club reaches 150 not out

ON a misty and dank day last Saturday afternoon at Grove Lane, Hockley Heath Cricket Club entertained Henley CC in commemoration of the first recorded game played by the home club back in 1874, reports Dave Bullivant.

That original contest was won by Henley who scored 55 and then bowled Hockley out for just 33. Just to emphasise their superiority, they then allowed Hockley to bat again. They did slightly better the second time around — they were out for 34.

Seeking revenge 150 years later, Hockley Heath batted first in a 35 overs a side game. They were led by Chris Freeman while Henley were captained by Peter Johnson.

Hockley overcame the handicap of having only ten players because of a late cry-off to total 183-9. Openers K Bandari (28) and B Akbar (57) gave Hockley a flying start and were then well supported by F Afzal (43 not out) and young A Akbar (12).

In reply to Hockley’s challenging total, Henley came out with all guns blazing. In just 30 overs, they reached 187-6. R Rebelo scored 103 not out, backed up by J Bramwell (22) and R Butler (21). Following on from his half century, B Akbar took one wicket and two fine catches in the deep.

The result might have been closer had two Hockley players not left the field with a few overs to go. K Bandari went off injured to sympathetic applause from the Hockley Heath old-time players who were in attendance. The other player left the field claiming a sore throat and flu symptoms.

So, there it is – Hockley Heath second best again. Maybe there will be another commemorative event in 150 years’ time when they will finally gain revenge for that 1874 defeat! In the meantime, despite the showery weather, the players all enjoyed taking part in such a special match, played at a beautiful ground that was in immaculate condition.
