Clifford claims Senior Open glory
STRATFORD-on-Avon Golf Club have recently held two open events, with a total of 275 golfers competing.
In early June, 125 golfers entered the Seniors’ Open with Stratford member John Clifford winning with a fine score of 41 points.
Paul Curry (Walmley) beat Stratford member David Shaylor on countback with 39 points.
Last Sunday, 150 golfers entered the Samuel Ryder Mixed Open, named after the founder of the Ryder Cup, who was club captain in 1929 and 1930.
Howard March (Robin Hood) and Stratford partner Jo Gibbons scored 47 points, beating Justin Hardy (Kenilworth) and partner Lesley Culpan (Machrie Bay) and Paula Corfield (Chippenham) and past Stratford captain Graham Carter on a back nine hole countback.
Congratulations must also go to the organising committees of both these events.
The members’ competition calendar is in full flow, with Andy Chilton winning the Shakespeare Cup with a fantastic nett 66 from his 18 handicap.
In the Coronation Cup, which is played over 36 holes in one day, six-time club champion James Smith shot an impressive gross 68, 67 to win by a clear 18 shots from recent Town Bowl winner Jonny Worthy.
In the ladies’ section, Sue Layton won the bronze division in the Boughton Salver, with Jenny Miremadi winning the silver.
