Stratford karter Lucas Blantford, 13, involved in horror 70mph crash at Whilton Mill
RISING star Lucas Blantford is facing a lengthy spell away from motorsport after being involved in a horror crash at Whilton Mill.
The 13-year-old was testing at the Northamptonshire circuit yesterday (Tuesday) and a scary collision at 70mph at the fastest corner sent the Stratford School pupil into a barrel roll.
Blantford and his kart was sent hurtling across the ground for 40 yards before coming to an abrupt stop.
The soon-to-be Junior Saloon Car Championship competitor was left with two broken wrists, bruised all over and he was bleeding heavily from his nose.
Blantford was air-lifted to Northampton General Hospital, where he was later discharged but upon a further inspection by surgeons, father Adrian told the Herald he has had to return today (Wednesday) for an operation to have pins put into his wrists.
"To be fair to Lucas, he never showed one bit of emotion after the crash," said Adrian.
"He did not cry and he did not scream. He only cried when he was told he could be facing months out from racing and that was hard to take as he's right in the mix for some championships.
"The way he reacted is testament to Lucas as a person.
"We're going back to the hospital today as they want to operate on Lucas immediately and then we'll see how long he's going to be away from racing for."
