Bards boosted by back-to-back wins

STRATFORD Town’s players will continue to do their talking on the pitch as they take on Southern League Premier Central play-off rivals Redditch United on Saturday.

That is the message from assistant manager Lee Vaughan who also praised his side for standing up to the ‘bullying’ tactics of Monday’s visitors Kettering Town.

The Bards have just four league games to go starting with the visit of Redditch and with leaders Needham Market seemingly heading for the title, the battle is on for a top five finish and a place in the play-offs with a place in National League North their goal.

Vaughan said: “We are ruthless at the moment and we will continue to let our football do the talking when we play Redditch United down here on Saturday.

“It was a really dominant performance [against Kettering]. We owed them one because I thought we were fairly beaten at their place but from start to finish we dominated.

“We went in at half-time 2-0 which is always a strange scoreline because they are only a goal away from coming back into the game. If there was one criticism of us it is that we didn’t finish them off. It should have been three, four or five and when you don’t finish teams off, it gives them a bit of impetus.

“They were playing in our half at the end, and put pressure on us in the final six or seven minutes but they shouldn’t have been in a position to do that. It should have been more comfortable for us.

“They arrived in good form but for them, they had the wrong game plan. They have tried to bully us and no-one can come to our place and do that. We are a big strong outfit, and we stand up to teams. We have been pushed, pulled and kicked but we’ve not reacted. We have played our football and the players are a credit to the football club.”

Goals from Callum Ebanks and Paul McCone wrapped up the win on Monday with Ebanks also on target in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat of Stourbridge but Vaughan was quick to praise Stratford’s unsung heroes.

He said: “I want to mention our midfield three who rarely get the credit they deserve – they won all the second balls today against Kettering and that really makes a difference. Everyone will read about our forwards scoring and our backline keeping a clean sheet but the lads in the middle work their socks off and sometimes that doesn’t get noticed.”
