Alcester bounce back on memorable day

ALCESTER made it five wins from their opening six games in Counties One Midlands West (South) with a 27-7 victory over Droitwich on a day that also saw the club field three teams for the first time in more than 20 years.

The Kings Coughton side were promoted into the league last season and head coach Dave Miles admits that the players have built on that first season.

“Last year we showed signs of being able to compete in this league but we were our own worst enemy in some of the games and we ended up sixth,” he explained.

“In the first half of that season there were games we should have won so we thought we should be OK this year and we have started really well. Last week [against leaders Luctonians 2nds] we were leading at half-time and thought we should have taken something from the game.

“The key is consistency and being able to put out a decent side each week. The numbers are there - we were able to field a third team for the first time in many years - and that is benefitting the whole club.

“We are not conceding many tries and a lot of that is down to the organisation of the backs and having a few older players in key positions.”

Elsewhere at the weekend there were defeats for both Stratford and Shipston in Regional Two Midlands West but victories for Harbury and Claverdon in Counties Two Midlands West (East).
