A perfect start for new Earls boss Pyott

Earlswood Town 8, Coventry Alvis 0

EARLSWOOD Town breezed into the semi-finals of the Coventry Charity Cup to give new manager Jason Pyott the perfect start after taking over from Joel Hughes.

Recent signing Elliot Edwards led the way with a goal in each half as the Earls booked their place in the last four where they will meet neighbours Hampton.

The tie was just five minutes old when the hosts opened the scoring, defender John Palmer finding the net with a fierce 25-yard drive.

Edwards was denied by Alvis keeper Dave Allen on 14 minutes but bagged his first of the game two minutes later as the ball bounced off him and ended up in the back of the net.

Harry Street thought he had made it 3-0 only for his effort to be chalked out by the offside flag but the Earls were not finished yet, scoring two more before the break.

Andy Matthews netted at the second attempt on 25 minutes after Allen had done well to initially deny him with Luke Woodward heading in the fourth just before half-time.

Matthews hit the post at the start of the second period as the home side continued where they had left off and the frontman was the provider for his side’s fifth of the afternoon, rolling the ball into Edwards’ path for his to slot home on 55 minutes.

Alvis had struggled to create anything in front of goal other than an Ashley Smith effort that flew wide and their cause was not helped when central defender James Hughes was sent off just before the hour after picking up a second booking.

Earlswood completed the scoring with three goals in the final 18 minutes., Edwards teed up Street for number six before two substitutes got in on the act - a neat side-footed effort from Josh Harwood and a cheeky flick over the line from Qadeer Parviz.

Speaking after the match, Pyott said: “There are probably better footballers in many of the other teams in this division but the intensity at which we work grinds teams down. But, as we have shown today, we can play.

“Signing Elliot Edwards has helped after we lost Harry Dixon - who had scored 16 goals in 15 games - to Coton Green. He plays alongside Andy Matthews in a weird 4-2-2-2 shape. He is off to America in August on a scholarship for four years and we know we have someone playing below their level.

“We have goals in us - we’ve put four past Bolehall, beat Coventrians by six. It was important that we didn’t get involved in a scrap. If that would have happened it could well have been 1-0 to them [Alvis].

“Hopefully we can progress to a final at the Ricoh and also finish the season around eighth or tenth. We can then look at next season.”

But Pyott knows there is a much tougher test on the horizon with a trip to MFL Division Two leaders Knowle on Saturday.

“Forget this one, Saturday’s game against Knowle will be the benchmark as to where we are,” he added. “If we play like that then we could give Knowle a game. I’m not saying we’re going to beat them because they are well-run and with a great group of players but we’ll be up for it.”
