Youngsters affected by Chernobyl visit Warwick Castle
A group of Belarusian teenagers who are in remission from cancer were given the chance to explore Warwick Castle during a special visit this month.
All 12 youngsters, who are from the Chernobyl area, were invited to the castle by Warwick Rotary Club, which has organised these visits for the past nine years.
During their visit costumed actors helped bring the site’s history to life while the group enjoyed clambering up the ramparts, being shown archery skills, jousting and exploring the castle dungeons.
The charity Chernobyl Children’s Project UK, Solihull branch, arranges to bring the children to the UK in an effort to restore their health, with the group accompanied by a doctor.
30 years after the nuclear disaster the area is still highly contaminated, affecting the water and local produce.
