Wings and Wheels at Wellesbourne Airfield

It was a tale of two Vulcans at Wellesbourne Airfield on Sunday as the site hosted its annual Wings and Wheels event.

Around 3,500 people attended Wings and Wheels, the highlight of Wellesbourne’s calendar and a magnet for aviation enthusiasts across the region.

The most anticipated moment of the day was the fast taxi run conducted by the airfield’s own XM655 Vulcan, which stunned crowds with its roaring engines.

XM655 wasn’t the only Vulcan to be seen at the airfield on the day though as Aston Martin displayed its new £1.8million Vulcan track-only supercar.

Named after the bomber, the very same Aston Martin Vulcan appeared on Top Gear on Sunday night.

Charles Brimson, chairman of the Vulcan XM655 Maintenance and Preservation Society, said: “We had a really good turnout, of course there were more last year but that was because that was the biggest Wings and Wheel ever when the last flying Vulcan made a pass of the airfield.

“We did a fast taxi run at 11.30am and it was a fantastic sight, as the aircraft did a high long wheelie. We had planned to do two taxi runs on the day, however we lent a piece of equipment to one of the other aircraft there and it developed a fault, so we were unable to use it for a second Vulcan taxi.”

Charles confirmed that planning for next year’s event is already underway.

There were also more than 200 classic vehicles at Wings and Wheels, the most ever to appear at the event, and people were able to look at the historic DeHaviland Vampire and Jet Provost aircraft, which were displayed on the day.
