Cherry tree chopped down in Alcester for no reason
IT was the unkindest cut of all which left Alcester residents seething after a perfectly healthy cherry tree was cut down by mistake.
The tree which is thought to have been planted eight to ten years ago on The Pastures,
Kinwarton Farm Road, Kinwarton, Alcester, was suddenly chopped up last Wednesday 1st May without any consultation with residents who were saddened to see the tree go for no apparent reason.
From being in full bloom and then reduced to a stump with a blob of orange paint on top has caused anger in the community as tree surgeons moved in put some bollards in place and cut down the tree shortly after.
Bob Baxter, Community Influencer and representative of The Pastures said: “The tree was planted when the houses were built. We don’t know why the tree was cut down. Public comments on social media range from sadness through to disgust and astonishment that alleged ‘tree surgeons’ could not have questioned ‘why’ before cutting it down?”
But who gave the green light to take such a swipe at mother nature?
This week red-faced Warwickshire County Council’s forestry team admitted they got their tree felling programme wrong.
After further enquiries Bob was told by the forestry team: “Unfortunately, it was a case of human error with the programming of the works, no fault of the arborist team carrying out the works”.
A replacement planting is scheduled for the next planting season, winter 2024-25.
The cherry tree was situated at the junction of Glebe Road and Fisher Road on The Pastures and was a well-established feature by the curb side.
