Wellesbourne male, 38, remanded in custody to prison after knife incident in Shipston

ON Monday 8th August PC Craig Purcell and PCSO Andy Steventon of Shipston Police SNT attended an address in Shipston on Stour to arrest a male who was wanted for questioning in the assault of a 6 year old girl near Shipston Scout Hut over the weekend.

The male was alleged to have kicked the girl from behind causing her to fall to the ground where she sustained injuries to her legs and arms.

PC Purcell located the male at a Shipston address but he refused to come out of the house. PCSO Steventon made use of the Police Drone to assist in cordoning off the property from the rear while PC Purcell remained at the front and Stratford District Council CCTV covered the side.

Noticing the drone to the rear and without notice the male ran from the property towards PC Purcell brandishing a kitchen knife with an 8 inch blade. The Officer was able to move out of the way and the male made off into Shipston Town Centre waving the knife as terrified members of the public ran. PC Purcell and PCSO Steventon cornered the male before chasing him back to his home address where he hid for the next hour.

Police resources were diverted to the address and a negotiator called but prior to their arrival we were able to convince the male to come out peacefully and without further incident.

The male was held in cells at Leamington Spa until the following day when he was interviewed. He was subsequently charged with assault of the 6 year old girl, assault of another female during July 2016 and possession of a knife in a public place. The decision was made to remand the male in custody and put him before Magistrates the following day with an application to request he be further remanded in custody.

On Wednesday 10th August Leamington Spa Magistrates accepted the application and remanded the male to prison until 8th September 2016 when he will appear at Warwick Crown Court.
