Thousands flock to national rail event

EUROPE’S largest outdoor rail exhibition, drawing an anticipated 6,000 visitors, has returned to Long Marston with Transport Secretary Chris Grayling also making an appearance. - writes Tom Hitchenor

Hundreds of leading suppliers are presenting a wide range of products and stock, with some of the latest technologies and innovations in the rail trade on display.

Organised by RAIL Magazine and taking place today and tomorrow, Thursday, the event is considered the biggest on the rail industry’s calendar.

Part of the line-up includes the showcasing of a battery-operated D Train. Three of these models were supplied to West Midlands Trains in March for future use, as reported by Rail Technology Magazine.

Other highlights will include counter-terrorism displays by the British Transport Police and a run out for the UK’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered locomotive, built by the University of Birmingham’s Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE).

Hosted by the Quinton Rail Technology Centre, this facility was once a Royal Engineers supply base in the Second World War and is the largest and most extensive rail storage facility in the UK.
