Stratford Musical Theatre Company brings Annie the Musical to Stratford Community Arts Venue from tonight

After a five-year wait and more than a few dramatic twists off-stage, Stratford Musical Theatre Company (SMTC) is finally set to bring Annie the Musical to life this May at Stratford Community Arts Venue.

The much-loved show will run from Wednesday 21 to Sunday 25 May 2025 at the venue formerly known as the Stratford Play House—fittingly, the very place where Annie’s journey was halted at the final hour back in 2020. That original production was cancelled just before its first performance due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This show is all about resilience, and in many ways, so is our story,” said Director Anya Brown. “To be finally staging Annie after all this time, and in the same venue that went dark on us five years ago, is incredibly emotional.”

SMTC’s route to the stage has not been without obstacles. Earlier this year, the company faced another blow when it was announced that the Stratford Play House—now known as Stratford Community Arts Venue—would close its doors in January 2025. Thanks to the support of Stratford Town Trust, the venue has been made available to SMTC for the May production while a new operator is sought.

The production sees a number of familiar faces returning to the spotlight. Chris McCoy reprises his role as Oliver Warbucks, alongside Louise Sinclair as his secretary Grace Farrell. Four children from the original 2020 children’s cast return, joined by two more who have grown into adult roles for this revival. Adding to the continuity is choreographer Ainsley Brolly, who was herself part of the original cast five years ago.

Taking centre stage in the title role are Mahlie Joseph and Kyla O’Brien, who will share the role of Annie. Also bringing family flair to the production are Katie Merrygold and Karen Welsh, who will alternate as the villainous Miss Hannigan—joined on stage by their daughters.

And no Annie would be complete without a furry co-star—Sandy will be played by a real-life rescue dog.

“Annie’s story is one of hope and perseverance,” said Brown. “It feels incredibly fitting that we’re finally telling it now, after everything this company has been through.”

Tickets for Annie will be released soon, and SMTC promises an unforgettable production packed with heart, humour, and plenty of Broadway sparkle.

Tickets for Annie, which plays for five days with two matinees from Wednesday 21 – Sunday 25 May at Stratford Community Arts Venue cost £22.50 for adults and £17.50 for Under 18s or Registered Disabled and are on sale now https://shorturl.at/PXkha
