Crowds flocked to Stratford's Garden of Remembrance to honour those who gave their lives in the Great War, 100 years ago.

Glorious autumn sunshine shone down on those who gathered for the sombre and moving ceremony for the Act of Remembrance, the laying of wreaths and two minutes' silence.

There was also a Civic Service of Remembrance, a service of Remembrance in Holy Trinity Church, at 10am.

The bells of Holy trinity Church rang out at 12.30pm for Ringing Remembers, joining the UK-wide commemoration of the announcement of the Armistice.

A beacon was lit by Tim Cox, Lord Lieutenant, at 7pm to formally mark the conclusion of the First World War and, following playing of the Last Post, the 247 names recorded on the First World War memorial were read out.

It was part of a chain of beacons around the United Kingdom and was followed by a peal of bells rung out from Holy Trinity.
