See Vulcan's final goodbye

On the ground at Gaydon, a sell-out day of events will include a talk by the engineers and crew who returned XH558 to the sky in 2007.

There will be no public entry to the Motor Centre’s site on the day.

The Vulcan will circumnavigate the UK on the weekend of 10th and 11th October, but will have then reached the end of her safe-flight life and will be kept in the same high-speed taxiable condition as the Wellesbourne Vulcan at Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster.

She will also be used to inspire the next generation of engineers.

Dr Robert Pleming, chief executive of the Vulcan to the Sky Trust, which owns XH558, told the Herald: "We are all very sad that we are having to stop flying, but excited about the future.

"It is a day that has been coming and that we have all known about since day one.

"Saturday will be the last time the Vulcan will be seen inland and unfortunately the day at Gaydon is sold out, but we hope many more people will see her fly by.

"We recognise the attraction XH558 has on the ground as well as in the air and she will be the centrepiece of an educational experience at Robin Hood Airport that we hope will encourage youngsters into a career in engineering and technology."
