Pupil progress at Alcester Academy makes it one of the top non-selective schools in the country

ALCESTER Academy is celebrating after achieving its best placing in the Department for Education performance tables, marking it as one of the top state schools in the country.

Following summer exams the school has been confirmed to have Progress 8 score of +0.76.

The score is designed to measure how much progress each student has made from Year 6 to Year 11.

A school’s Progress 8 score is usually between -1 and +1. A score of +1 means that pupils in that school achieve one grade higher in each qualification than other similar pupils nationally. A score of -1 means they achieve one grade lower.

Recently updated performance tables on the government website (https://www.gov.uk/school-performance-tables) showed the school had the third best Progress 8 score for a non-selective school in Warwickshire.

In Stratford, King Edward VI and Stratford Girls’ Grammar schools were placed first and second in best Progress 8 score, with +0.98 and +0.94 respectively.

Alcester Academy head teacher Sarah Mellors told the Herald: “The school has worked hard over many years to secure the best opportunities for their students as they head off to their post-16 destinations. More students than ever before are securing places to study A- levels at sixth forms such as AGS, KES and SGGS. The academy are keen to support all students through to their next stage and positively advocate apprenticeships and vocational courses for those students for whom A-levels are not appropriate.”

The chair of the school governors, Mike Dean, added: “The commitment from the staff at the school to support the students is extraordinary. Staff go the extra mile to ensure that students feel valued and supported throughout their entire school career. Interventions provide bespoke guidance for the students and aspirations across the school are always very high. We are extremely proud of what has been achieved for the students in 2023.”
