Rough sleepers refuse help despite sub-zero temperatures
THREE rough sleepers in Stratford-upon-Avon have refused the offer of temporary accommodation despite plummeting temperatures this week.
The district council said one rejected the no drink or drugs rule while also insisting they preferred to be outside anyway, and the other two are said to incorrectly fear their status on the housing waiting list would be affected.
Nine rough sleepers have, however, accepted temporary accommodation since the council's Severe Weather Protocol was triggered almost a month ago.
Under the protocol, the council must offer emergency temporary accommodation to all rough sleepers if the Met Office forecasts temperatures to be below freezing on three consecutive nights.
The council's rough sleeper officer, Ann Johnson, said the three rough sleepers who so far had refused help would be approached every day that the protocol was in place.
It will next be reviewed this Friday, 2nd March.
She added that she had to respect their wishes, but also ensured they had sufficient blankets and sleeping bags, insisting everything that could be done was being done to ensure their safety during this Siberian cold snap.
"We can't force them into accommodation, but I want to assure anyone who thinks we're not helping them, that we are trying to, and will continue to do so," Ann added.
An online appeal has also been set up so people can confidently give to Stratford Link Project, which supports rough sleepers and homeless people.
It comes as Ann confirmed their were professional beggars from neighbouring Coventry and Birmingham operating in Stratford.
