TEN men who lived in Great William Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, went to fight in the First World War and never came home again.

Theirs is just one of the many stories that have now come to light thanks to an exhibition at The Old Slaughterhouse organised by Escape Arts.

The First World War: Stratford’s Untold Stories presents a personal and collective insight into the lives of local soldiers and the impact of the Great War on their families, the community and on the town, including work developed through Stratford’s schools.

The exhibition includes letters, postcards and pictures plus a film made by students at King Edward VI School about the former pupils who fought in the war. There is also a mock-up of a war canteen.

Escape are still asking for local families to bring in their First World War stories and images to add to the exhibition and the legacy of the project. Visit info@escapearts.org.uk for more information.

The exhibition in The Yard, Sheep Street runs until 3rd December and is open every Thursday, 1 to 4pm, Friday and Saturday 11 to 4pm.

L Escape Arts say they are keen to hear from a gentleman who came into the centre with his father’s prisoner of war records. Unfortunately they do not have his contact details and would like to hear from him again. If you can help please contact karenwilliams@escapearts.org.uk
