PUPILS at Welford Primary School learnt about the dangers of live construction sites recently amid extensive development work in the area.

Led by St Modwen’s health and safety team, which is one of the developers of the nearby Meon Vale site, the day taught Year Six pupils how to identify large machinery and other potential dangers, such as scaffolding and deep holes.

Ivor Goodsite — the considerate constructors’ mascot — helped drive the message through to children while back in the classroom pupils took part in a poster competition, highlighting key safety messages from the day.

The winning safety poster will be displayed on hoardings around the Meon Vale site to promote site safety to residents and passers by.

Julie Leeman, head teacher, said: “There’s a high level of construction work on-going in the area surrounding the school, so it was a really useful exercise to have St Modwen come in and teach the children how to stay safe around these sites.

“By the end of the assembly, the children were able to identify the various hazards that can be found on site, such as falling objects and heavy machinery.”

Dave Knight, Project Manager at Meon Vale, added: “A building site might seem like a great place to explore but in reality they can be extremely dangerous, especially for children looking for somewhere to play.

“This is why it is so important for St. Modwen Homes to work with local schools and raise awareness of the hazards to keep pupils safe.”
