STRATFORD Primary School pupils learned the basics of bread making as part of a weekly cooking class — under the expert eye of a professional chef.

Chef Matt Humphriss plans and teaches recipes linked to the curriculum. Currently he’s teaching the year 4 pupils as they follow the theme of ‘I am Warrior’ with recipes connected to invaders and settlers.

So far the pupils have made Roman Slipper Loaves using spelt flour and Olive Bread and pita flat bread, which is made in a skillet pan. He also started a new basic cooking skills after-school club last week for pupils from years 5 and 6.

Headteacher, and Matt’s mum, Gill Humphriss, said: “Matt works with the children to teach them that cooking is all about having fun and enjoying playing with ingredients to make good, delicious foods. We wanted to give the children proper skills for life.”

Matt said: “I want to show them the basics of cooking so they can go home and enjoy it. I essentially bring a kitchen into the classroom. “The pupils get their own chef hat and jacket. If I can get them to a stage where they go home cooking, trying new things then I’d consider that a success.”
