Post office reopens after weekend burglary
STRATFORD'S Henley Street Post Office has reopened this morning after a mysterious closure yesterday left people speculating.
The Post Office had been closed for nearly a day and a half of business with only a sign posted on the front door of the shop which read: “Due to Unforeseen Circumstances we will be closed today. Sorry for any inconvenience.”
But in fact the doors opened to customers again at 10am and according to a Post Office statement to the Herald, the action was taken following a burglary at the store, which was targeted by burglars at the weekend.
She said: “Stratford on Avon Post Office reopened this morning at 10am. The branch was temporarily closed due to a burglary on Saturday evening. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure, which was beyond our control.”
A spokesperson with Warwickshire Police confirmed police were called to a reported burglary at the Henley Street Post Office on Sunday 7 January.
The police spokesperson said: "An amount of cash was taken from within the building sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning and investigations are ongoing at this time.”
Anyone with information can call police on 101, quoting incident number 89 of 7 January. Alternatively, people can provide information anonymously to the independent charity Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
Many people were left frustrated after turning up to the closed store only to be redirected to another post office in Birmingham Road.
One of those people, Jean Beasley, said: “I’ve come to do my husband’s car tax, and pay my rent. I can do the rent at Drayton, but the tax can only be done at a main one. I’m not impressed. They don’t even give an explanation.”
