PICTURES AND VIDEO: Stratford Mop 2016
THE sound of fairground rides and the smell of candyfloss hung in the air this week as Stratford-upon-Avon’s annual Mop Fair rolled into town.
Hair-raising rides filled much of the town centre on Tuesday and Wednesday with crowds packed into the streets, soaking up the atmosphere.
Among the thrillseekers was Cllr Mike Gittus, who described The King ride in Bridge Street as “the best ride he’s ever been on” — high praise from a man who spent 26 years as a police officer in Blackpool. See front page picture.
There was also the traditional bidding for the first slice from Stratford Scouts’ pork roast, which usually involves a contest between the chairman of the district council and the mayor.
This year saw a slight break with tradition when Cllr Gittus bid £60 and the highly sought piece of pork was his to enjoy.
A cheque was also handed to the district council Chairman’s Charities by the Wilson family, who run the Mop.
The Runaway Mop will be in town next Thursday and Friday, 20th and 21st October.
